FileTally is for people who need a page total across a mixed folder. It covers supported documents, spreadsheets, presentations, images and other files, including material inside ZIP archives.
A mixed folder rarely offers one obvious definition of a page. A PDF may have an explicit count, while a spreadsheet depends on layout, and an unreadable file should not silently become zero. FileTally addresses that distinction. It is aimed at people preparing an inventory or estimating the scale of a document collection, where understanding the origin of a total matters more than receiving one unexplained number quickly.

What it does
The listing distinguishes counted, rendered, estimated and assigned pages. Unknown or locked files remain visible, and corrections can be recorded without changing sources.
The listing separates counted, rendered, estimated and assigned pages. These categories should remain visible in the interpretation of a report. A counted page total and a user-assigned estimate can be useful together, but they are not equivalent evidence. File counts and spreadsheet cells are also described as separate from page totals, avoiding another easy source of confusion.
A sensible workflow is to inspect a representative folder, open the review area and look at the files that need attention. The developer describes supported documents, spreadsheets, presentations, images and other material, including content inside ZIP archives. That breadth makes exception handling important: unknown, locked and unreadable files remain visible instead of disappearing into a tidy summary.
Corrections can be saved without changing the original files, and the listing names saved scans, undo and CSV or JSONL reports. These are ways to retain a decision process. If pages are assigned manually, record why that was done so another person can interpret the total later. We have not tested the counting engines, archive handling or report completeness.
Before you install
A spreadsheet cell count and a file count are not page totals. Inspect unreadable items and estimates before using a summary for billing or a formal inventory.
The selected report categorised this app for Mac, but Apple's compatibility wording requires a careful distinction. The listing describes it as designed for iPad and not verified for macOS, while offering compatibility on an Apple-silicon Mac with the stated system requirement. That is not evidence of a native Mac interface or Intel support. Check the current compatibility panel before purchasing for a particular computer.
Counting also depends on what the result will be used for. An estimate for initial planning may tolerate uncertainty that would be inappropriate for an invoice, disclosure inventory or other formal process. Review the unresolved files and the meaning of each category before applying the number. The existence of a report cannot establish that the source folder was complete or that every file could be interpreted.
Choose a sample containing both straightforward and difficult files: a known PDF, a spreadsheet with a deliberate print layout and an item that cannot be opened. That exposes how the categories are communicated without importing an entire archive first. For a saved correction, preserve the reason rather than only the replacement number. If the collection changes, distinguish the earlier scan from a later inventory instead of treating both as the same source. These checks are about a traceable counting workflow, not a claim that we have validated every supported format or a guarantee of suitability for formal billing.
Price and access
Folder scans and report export require a one-time Solo purchase. The listing says there is no free trial or subscription.
The store offers a free download, but the listing says scanning folders and exporting reports require a one-time FileTally Solo purchase. It explicitly describes no subscription or free trial. Downloading the interface therefore should not be confused with a free opportunity to run the full counting workflow. Confirm the local purchase price and compatibility first, especially when the intended device is a Mac running the iPad-designed app.
Our take
The explicit uncertainty categories are more useful than one unexplained total. We have not tested supported formats or counting accuracy.
FileTally's most useful idea is an explainable total: show what was counted, what was estimated and what still requires review. That can be more valuable than a larger-looking feature list if the work depends on understanding uncertainty.
We have not verified accuracy or evaluated its Mac presentation. Begin by deciding what a page means for the intended task, then compare a small set of familiar files with the result. Keep source files and the report together. If a total cannot be traced back to its categories and corrections, it should not acquire authority merely because it was exported from specialised software.
A correction can make a working inventory more useful while also introducing a judgement that deserves explanation. Separate an estimate supplied for convenience from a page count obtained directly from a readable document. If another person needs the total, include that distinction with the figure rather than requiring them to guess how the number was produced. This matters especially when several file types are combined.
