Layrest: White Noise for Sleep

Build a sleep-sound mix with a clear timer

Get it from the official store ↗

Layrest layers background sounds on an iPhone for relaxation. Choose a sound or mix, adjust each volume and set a timer that fades out at the end.

A background sound app is most useful when it makes the bedtime setup simpler rather than adding decisions at the moment someone wants to rest. Layrest offers individual sounds and layered mixes, with separate volume controls and a timer. That can suit someone who prefers a specific blend to a long playlist. The relevant question is whether the sound and controls are comfortable in the actual room; an elaborate library is not inherently better than one suitable sound.

Based on official store information. We have not tested this app hands-on.

What it does

Free use lists seven sounds and two layers. Pro adds a larger sound library, more layers and saved mixes; the Apple Watch app acts as a remote for phone playback.

Start with one of the free sounds and a modest volume. If another layer is useful, add it deliberately and listen to the combination rather than treating more layers as an automatic improvement. Rain over a noise sound, for example, changes both texture and the amount of continuous sound in the room. The listing describes two simultaneous layers in free use and up to five with Pro.

Timer behaviour is an important part of this workflow. The developer describes a slow fade at the end and says pausing also pauses the timer. Free timers extend to six hours and forty-five minutes, while longer or unrestricted playback is part of Pro. Those are access distinctions, not evidence that a particular duration produces better sleep.

The Watch component is described as a remote: it starts or pauses a sound or saved mix while audio comes from the iPhone. That matters when deciding where the sound will be heard and which device must remain available. Background playback and lock-screen controls are also listed, so the user need not keep the main interface open simply to reach basic controls.

Before you install

Sleep associations shown beside a mix do not establish that the sound caused better sleep. This is a relaxation app, not a treatment or medical device.

The app may place Apple Health sleep history beside the mix used on a night. That association can be interesting to review, but it cannot by itself establish cause and effect. Sleep is influenced by many factors, and a longer recorded night is not proof that a particular sound caused an improvement. The developer explicitly describes Layrest as relaxation software rather than a medical device.

Choose a volume that remains comfortable for everyone sharing the space. Check whether the timer and fade suit the intended routine before depending on them overnight. We have not measured loop continuity, background reliability or battery consumption. Ongoing sleep problems deserve appropriate professional attention rather than repeated changes to audio settings in search of a guaranteed solution.

If a mix is intended to run while the phone is out of reach, make sure the intended playback device and controls are understood before settling down. The listing includes sounds described as noise colours and brainwave tones, but their names alone do not establish therapeutic benefit. A preferred sound can remain a simple environmental choice. If two people share the room, decide together whether layered playback, a shorter fade or silence is more appropriate. Keep the first setup uncomplicated so changing one control has a clear effect. That makes the routine easier to evaluate without treating a nightly score as a verdict on the sound.

Price and access

Free sounds remain available. Pro offers monthly, annual or one-time lifetime access at the displayed price.

Seven sounds and the two-layer workflow are described as free and remain available when a trial is skipped. Pro adds the full library, saved mixes, more layers and extended timer choices. Access is offered through monthly or annual subscriptions or a one-time lifetime purchase. Compare those options with the particular limitation you need removed. A bigger catalogue may not justify ongoing payment if a free sound already does the required job. Confirm the displayed price and trial renewal conditions.

Our take

The appeal is control over a simple bedside sound routine. We have not tested loop continuity, battery use or sleep outcomes.

The clearest reason to consider Layrest is control: pick a small set of sounds, set their relationship and decide when they end. A simple, repeatable arrangement is more valuable than changing mixes constantly without knowing what feels comfortable.

This is a source-based first look, not a sleep assessment. We have not tested the app or its Health comparisons. Use the free controls to judge the interaction and the sound itself, then consider whether saved mixes or longer playback are genuinely needed. Evaluate convenience and personal comfort without turning the app's statistics or sound names into claims of medical effectiveness.

The list of available sounds is a choice of textures, not a ranking of effectiveness. Compare them at a comfortable level and judge whether the control layout makes the routine easier, rather than expecting a particular label to produce a predictable result.
