TODO BIRD

Keep desktop projects and planning data offline

Get it from the official store ↗

TODO BIRD is a Windows task and project planner whose listing emphasises local SQLite storage. It targets people who want structured projects without depending on cloud accounts.

A local project planner can be attractive when a person wants to keep schedules and working data on one computer rather than create another cloud account. TODO BIRD presents that desktop-first approach with structures beyond a basic checklist. The useful question is whether those structures make a real plan easier to understand. A complex-looking chart is not inherently a better plan, especially when the inputs are still uncertain.

Based on official store information. We have not tested this app hands-on.

What it does

The description lists work-breakdown structures, critical-path calculations, Gantt dependencies, milestones, a world clock and an offline voice companion.

The listing names a work-breakdown structure, critical-path calculation and an interactive Gantt chart with dependencies and milestones. Start by identifying the work and the relationship between tasks before arranging dates on a chart. A dependency should express a reason one activity cannot proceed independently, not merely the order in which the author happened to type it.

A critical path is a calculation based on the entered plan. It is potentially useful for seeing which assumptions drive the overall schedule, but the result changes when durations or dependencies change. Use a small project with an already understood sequence before assuming a calculated result is meaningful for a larger undertaking. We have not checked the scheduling implementation.

The developer also lists an offline voice companion and a multi-timezone clock. Those may support a daily review or awareness of another location, but they serve different purposes from project logic. Inspect the actual role of each before adding it to a routine. The source describes local SQLite storage and no external account requirement; that establishes the advertised storage model, not a tested recovery or export process.

Before you install

A calculated critical path is useful only when durations and dependencies are realistic. Do not mistake a tidy chart for a validated project plan.

Local storage brings a responsibility to understand where important work lives and how it can be recovered. Do not assume that offline means automatically backed up or that another device holds a current copy. Check the actual options available before moving the only version of a project into a new tool. We have not tested data export, backup or restoration.

The planner's calculations should remain explainable. If a milestone moves, the user should be able to connect that change to an input or dependency. A voice summary may be convenient while still repeating an unrealistic plan. Keep the assumptions visible and separate progress actually achieved from time merely allocated on a schedule. The interface cannot establish that a task's estimated effort was correct simply by displaying it precisely.

Distinguish a deadline from an estimated duration. Both may appear as dates or bars, but one is a commitment and the other is an assumption about work. Add a milestone only when it represents something the project can meaningfully confirm. For recurring personal tasks, consider whether this level of scheduling helps or adds unnecessary maintenance. A broad project toolkit does not need to be used at full complexity from the start. These are planning choices for evaluating the advertised system, not evidence that we have validated its calculation methods or suitability for a particular professional process.

Our take

The combination may suit local personal project planning. We have not tested scheduling calculations, voice features or data export.

TODO BIRD is most interesting for a person who needs more structure than a daily list while preferring local desktop work. The combination of tasks, dependencies and a schedule can support deliberate planning if it remains tied to realistic assumptions.

We have not tested it. Begin with a small project, record why the dependencies exist and revise one estimate to inspect the effect. Check how the work can be kept outside the app before expanding the plan. The strongest result would be a schedule another person can follow and challenge, not a polished chart whose critical path is accepted without understanding the inputs behind it.

Start with a deliberately simple project containing two parallel tasks and one shared successor. Write down the expected finish independently and compare the displayed result. This is an evaluation suggestion, not a test we performed. Inspect dependency direction, durations and scheduling assumptions before interpreting a disagreement. Clear task names and a recorded reason for each dependency are more useful than a visually elaborate chart whose logic nobody can explain.
